The Thirtieth of September Movement or more commonly known as G30S/PKI is a historical event that is remembered every year. This event is known as a bloody incident because it involved the assassination of senior military officers and started the fall of President Soekarno’s presidency.
Members of this incident are suspected of being associated with the PKI. PKI or Communist Party of Indonesia is a party with socialist and communist ideologies. Therefore, the main purpose of this incident is believed to bring down President Soekarno’s presidency and take over the government by implementing a communist ideological system.
At the time, this incident has created many crises in Indonesia, such as economic crises, political crises, and military instability. However, the incident also reminds us of the importance of democracy and the protection of human rights to prevent abuse of power and political abuse.
To remember the Thirtieth of September Movement, Communication Science students also shared their thoughts on the incident. Khairunnisa Az-Zahra, a class of 2021 Communication Science student, usually goes by Aira, feels that this moment reminds us of the importance of democracy and protection of human rights for ourselves and our country.
Through this event, Aira hopes that we can be wiser in spreading information and in responding to any issue. She said that there are still people who judge or respond to others who disagree with them with violence. She also said that there is still a lot of unverified information that are currently spreading on social media that can cause conflict between communities. Lastly, Aira hopes that we can recognize, appreciate, and take care of our historical places to commemorate our national heroes.
Muhamad Arifin Ilham, a class of 2022 Communication Science student, also shared his opinion. Ilham said that as an Indonesian, it is important for us to know the facts of our country’s history. Knowing and understanding history can be a reminder for us that the struggles of our heroes are invaluable for our safe and prosperous lives today.
The establishment of Indonesia is certainly inseparable from its history and the struggles of heroes in the past. Even after independence, Indonesia still faces many conflicts. The Thirtieth of September Movement is one evidence of the struggle of our heroes to gain sovereignty out of many.
