The focus on research is closely connected to Fikom’s history. In the past, Communication Science was known as Ilmu Penerangan (Information Science), then changed to Publisistik (Publicistics), which was strongly tied to journalism. Over time, however, academics realized that journalism was only a small part of the broader field of communication. That’s when Fikom expanded into three majors: Communication Management, Publicistics, and Public Relations.
Later, the Ministry of National Education gave a mandate to establish a new program: Communication Science as its own discipline. Communication Science is even called the “mother of science,” because it became the foundation for many other specializations, such as Public Relations, Television and Film, and more.
So, why research? According to her, it’s because Communication Science at Unpad emphasizes analysis and analysis is the heart of research. Research creates innovation, fresh ideas, and unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else. And being a researcher isn’t only useful in academia, it’s also highly valued in business, economics, education, agriculture, and so many other fields. In other words, research is not just a trademark of Ilkom Unpad, but also an essential skill wherever you go.
