Gen Z’s Digital Resistance through Instagram’s Add Yours Feature

Since its launch in late 2021, the Add Yours feature has become one of Instagram’s most attention-grabbing tools. Initially, it was introduced as an interactive medium that allowed users to start certain trends to be continued by others, creating a chain of connected interactions. For instance, trends such as uploading OOTD (Outfit of the Day) photos or childhood pictures quickly gained traction. The feature soon became a favorite due to its ease of use, uniqueness, and its ability to support self-branding for its users.

However, in recent times, this feature has evolved beyond being a mere source of entertainment. It has transformed into a medium of resistance, a form of digital communication used to challenge pressing social, political, and environmental issues. For example, the Add Yours chain “All Eyes on Rafah” highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Palestine, while “Indonesia Darurat” (Indonesia in Emergency) responded to the controversy surrounding the revision of the Regional Election Law following a Constitutional Court ruling on candidacy thresholds. These instances demonstrate that the Add Yours feature has developed into a space for symbolic resistance as well as a platform for digital advocacy in the modern era, particularly for younger generations. This type of resistance is considered more accessible, as it does not require significant financial or physical resources, unlike conventional campaigns in public spaces.

Nevertheless, this phenomenon raises a critical question: does it truly indicate increased awareness among Instagram users about social issues, or is it simply a manifestation of the bandwagon effect in the digital age? The bandwagon effect refers to the tendency of individuals to participate in something merely because many others are doing it. Thus, while Instagram’s Add Yours stories may create a sense of public awareness, they can also result in superficial participation. In other words, this phenomenon may encourage Gen Z, who are the most frequent users of the feature, to follow various Add Yours trends without genuinely intending to voice the issues they represent. Such behavior is often labeled as slacktivism, a term describing activism that is minimal and instantaneous, aimed primarily at signaling concern for a cause without any substantial, active involvement.

This phenomenon is also closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Several issues raised through the Add Yours trend align with specific SDG points, such as Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which promotes peace and justice, as well as Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, which addresses the fight against discrimination and social injustice. Thus, although Add Yours is often regarded as a form of instant activism, the platform can still serve as an entry point for young generations to engage with the broader global agenda.

Ultimately, Instagram’s Add Yours feature demonstrates that social media is not merely a source of entertainment but can transform into a tool for amplifying issues that demand attention. However, its use must be accompanied by adequate digital literacy to prevent misuse by irresponsible actors who may exploit the trend to spread propaganda. In this context, digital literacy does not only mean the ability to operate social media but also involves critical skills such as filtering information, understanding issue contexts, and being aware of the impact of every digital act of participation. With sufficient digital literacy, Add Yours can continue to serve as a healthy space for collective communication among young people, enabling them to voice important issues in the modern era without resorting to radical or anarchic actions. Therefore, students and the younger generation in general are expected not to remain passive users who simply follow trends but to play an active role in using Add Yours wisely, both to amplify important issues and to drive meaningful social change.
