Engaging in physical activities, such as sports, offers a wide range of benefits, not only for physical health but also for mental well-being. This was evident in the I-Smash program, which was held during the first term by the Arts & Sports Department of Hima Ilkom 2025 under the Kabinet Makna Kita, from April 21-23 2025, at the Student Center FIKOM Unpad. The program was a badminton competition that invited FIKOM Unpad students to actively participate.
Lionel Saputra, a 2024 Communication Studies student and project officer of I-Smash, explained that one of the main goals of the program was to showcase the talents of FIKOM students. Additionally, the competition provided an opportunity for badminton enthusiasts to sharpen their skills while enjoying a fun and engaging activity.
The event also created many memorable moments. At first, Lionel felt nervous and anxious about his responsibilities. However, throughout the three-day event, he was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm of the participants. Lionel said, “Nah selama tiga hari itu tuh, aku ngerasa kayak antusiasme dari orang-orang di FIKOM ini lumayan tinggi lah.” He felt this excitement not only from the participants competing but also from the supporters who helped boost the energy of the competition. One of the most memorable moments for him occurred during the intense match between the Communication Studies and Public Relations programs, which went on for three sets.
Of course, the success of the program did not come without challenges. Lionel revealed that one of the obstacles faced was miscommunication with UBTU (Unpad Badminton Unit) regarding the permit for borrowing the court at Balai Santika. Nevertheless, this issue was resolved through continuous coordination during both the preparation and execution of the event.
At the end of the interview, Lionel shared his impressions and messages. He admitted that he did not expect the level of enthusiasm from both participants and supporters to be so high. He hopes that next year’s I-Smash program can continue to be held with the same level of excitement while further strengthening solidarity among FIKOM students.
In terms of health, programs like I-Smash serve as an important platform for students to maintain both their physical and mental well-being. Students often neglect their health due to busy academic schedules and other commitments. Through sports activities like this, students have the opportunity to stay active and healthy, both physically and mentally. This aligns with one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: “Good Health and Well-Being”, which aims to improve both physical and mental.
