The Odd Semester is Over: Students’ Rating on Communication Science Courses

As the final exams week completed, the odd semester has come to an end. Many insights, experiences, and memories remain in students’ hearts about this semester’s courses. Communication Science students — from the first to the third-year — shared their stories, especially about their favorite course and overall rating for the semester.

Afifah Lizwaril is a class of 2024 Communication Science student whose favorite course of the first semester is Public Speaking. Afifah believed that public speaking is a basic skill that a Communication Science student should master. From the informative Public Speaking course, she felt a significant difference in her everyday-communication implementing the course. As a first year student, Afifah filled the semester with enjoyable activities and meeting new people. She gave her first semester a 10/10 rating because she learned new insights and essential experiences for college life. Moreover, Afifah realized that the first semester would be the easiest compared to the upcoming semesters.

Farhan Haris is a class of 2024 Communication Science student who also found the Public Speaking course as his favorite of the first semester. Farhan has transformed from a person who gets nervous easily to speak in front of many people, to a speaker who is confident to share his thoughts effectively. In addition, the Public Speaking course taught Farhan to be more creative. He realized that public speaking is not only about the ideas shared, but also the techniques used so that the audience will truly listen. With the joys that Farhan found in learning as well as creating projects like proposals, flyers, and others, he gave his first semester an 8/10. Farhan believed that the given projects are to prepare him for the upcoming semesters.

Moving on to the second-year student, Dzakwan Achmad Fatah is a class of 2023 Communication Science student with Political Communication as his favorite course of the third semester. Even though he was pessimistic at first with the political riots, his first impression of the Political Communication Course turned out to be perfect when the “Peringatan Darurat” moment happened. Since then, he immersed himself more with the Political Communication materials. Furthermore, Dzakwan rated his third semester a 7/10 because he felt too hectic in completing courses like Survey Method and Social Statistics.

Naura Faiza Hadijaya is a class of 2023 Communication Science student who chose Health Communication as her favorite course of the third semester. Naura thought that the learning in class was enjoyable with the lecturers teaching the materials effectively. She also found that the course’s knowledge is relevant in everyday life, especially from the final project. Naura got the experience to consult directly with the expert doctor from Halodoc and learned a lot from the doctor’s perspectives. With the fun activities and challenging courses that stayed in her head all the time, Naura gave her third semester a 8/10 rating.

Lastly, the third-year students. Najwa Shihab Maghfira is a class of 2022 Communication Science student who marked Digital Mediated Communication as her favorite course of the fifth semester. In her opinion, it was a wonderful opportunity that this course let students handle a real company’s social media — Divia Unpad TV — as the final project. Therefore, Najwa saw it as an illustration of real work in the future. However, with the amount of projects that must be completed along with her active roles in organizations, Najwa rated her fifth semester a 3.75/10. While her semester was tough, she was grateful to be surrounded by her friends.

Ursula Tania is a class of 2022 Communication Science student, and her favorite course of the fifth semester is Popular Culture. Ursula stated that in this course, she had a blast learning things that are close to us, such as anime, K-Pop, and other cultures that are popular. Still, Ursula faced difficulties in completing the final projects that made her give a 4/10 rating for her fifth semester. She felt that the course-learning was enjoyable but when it came to final projects, they were very tough.

Different students viewed and experienced the odd semester differently. One same thing is that they learned new things and found interesting ways to complete the semester. Now that the Odd Semester of the 2024/2025 Academic Year has ended, all students are encouraged to prepare and start a fresh page for the even semester next year. (Ed)
