Students’ Preparation for Odd Semester 2024/2025 Community Service During Holiday!

The odd semester’s holiday is always different for the third-year students of Communication Science Study Programme Universitas Padjadjaran. According to the curriculum, the fifth semester’s holiday is the time for students to complete the Community Service Program, known as KKN. Each student will be assigned to a group consisting of other students from different faculties. Every KKN group will conduct a community program based on the Field Supervisor’s topic. As the KKN will start on January 10, 2025, students have a few weeks of holiday beforehand. Let’s have a look at their preparations for KKN!
Sabila Riska Bianti, a class of 2022 Communication Science Student, shared her story. Sabila felt the difference of the holiday timeline because of KKN. Usually, students get almost two months of holiday on semester break, this time, however, it is only around two weeks before KKN. During these two weeks, Sabila and her group started dividing the members into different divisions and job descriptions. Next, her group planned to discuss with the Field Supervisor about the program, as well as survey the location with other members of the group. Furthermore, Sabila prepared personal needs that might be necessary for KKN. Not only preparing with the group, Sabila also making sure of her own things for KKN during the short holiday.
For the KKN itself, her group will execute a program about a marketing strategy for Padjadjaran Leuit Parab Feed Bank. To help her implement the program, Sabila thought the Communication Science courses that might be relevant are Social Marketing Communication and an elective course, Business Communication. She learned some basic marketing theories and skills from those courses. Therefore, Sabila wishes she can carry out the program better with the knowledge.
Rona Pinta Sinaga is a class of 2022 Communication Science student who also found this semester holiday different from usual. Since her hometown is on Sumatra Island, Rona decided not to return to her home or a relative’s house on Java Island, due to the short holiday. She felt her holiday was quite different as she got busy preparing things related to KKN, such as proper clothes, supplies of personal hygiene needs, even a certain amount of budget for emergency needs during KKN later.
For the community program in Rona’s KKN group, they will execute a program about the tourism promotion strategy of Margamekar Village, South Sumedang. In her opinion, there are relevant Communication Science courses that might be a help in implementing the program, such as Social Marketing Communication, Digital Mediated Communication, and also other courses related to content and audience research. Marketing strategies that were learned in the Social Marketing Communication course, along with the practical content-creating in the Digital Mediated Communication course’s final project, might give Rona a deeper understanding of the program’s promotion strategy.
With the limited holiday, students still spared time to prepare the best for their KKN, as a part of the Communication Science Study Programme. Hopefully, many lessons and knowledge learned during classes can be implemented in real community service. From Communication Science courses to community service implementation, good luck for your KKN, Yellow Fellow! (Ed)
