May 1 marks International Workers’ Day, a historic moment that symbolizes the struggle of the working class and serves as a reminder that social justice and workers’ welfare are still goals to be pursued. This day honors the significant contributions of workers to the development of societies around the world.
In Indonesia, International Workers’ Day has been officially recognized as a national holiday since 2014. This recognition serves as a symbolic acknowledgment of the crucial role workers play. However, commemoration alone is not enough, as many challenges still confront workers, especially in today’s digital era.
Unequal wage distribution, labor exploitation through contract-based systems, limited access to social security and healthcare, the emergence of digital-based work that threatens labor rights protection, and various other issues continue to demand serious attention from the government.
Today should be a moment for reflection and an opportunity to push for policy reforms that are more supportive of workers, so that social justice can truly be fulfilled. Because Workers’ Day is a day for all of us who believe that decent work is a basic right.
Happy International Workers’ Day. Power to the workers!
