s a tribute to the pioneer of women’s emancipation in Indonesia, Raden Ajeng Kartini, the Indonesian people commemorate Kartini Day every year on April 21. This day serves as a moment to remember Kartini’s efforts in fighting for women’s rights that were once denied.
More than just a name, Kartini stands as a symbol of the spirit of women who continue to move forward, even when the world does not always offer an easy path. Her struggle must now be continued by the great women of Indonesia today.
On this occasion, Dr. Purwanti Hadisiwi, M.Ext.Ed., a lecturer in the Communication Science Study Programme, shared her thoughts on Kartini Day: “Kartini is a cornerstone of the struggle of Indonesian women. We should be proud that what R.A. Kartini once envisioned can now be a source of inspiration for women in many other regions. Women in Indonesia today have equal rights to men, thanks to what R.A. Kartini has fought for,” she said.
Purwanti also expressed her hopes for the present struggle, that is to change society’s perception of women. There must be equal perspectives about the rights of both men and women. While many rights have been granted equally, those rights are still limited due to prevailing societal perceptions.
To all Indonesian women, let us uphold R.A. Kartini as a symbol of persistent spirit. Because every woman deserves to be the best version of herself. Happy Kartini Day! [Ed]
