Dare to Speak, Dare to Inspire! Happy World Speech Day 2025!

Every March 15, we celebrate World Speech Day — a day that goes beyond grand orations on luxurious stages. It’s a celebration of the power of words to move hearts and spark change, even from the humblest voices in the simplest places.

Dr. Hadi Suprapto Arifin, M.Si., a Public Speaking lecturer from the Communication Science Program at Universitas Padjadjaran, shares his insights on the importance of thorough preparation before speaking in public.

“Qui ascendit sine labore, descendit sine honore.”
“Those who rise without effort, fall without honor.”
“If you go on stage unprepared, you leave without dignity. Preparation ensures clarity, fluency, and message effectiveness,” he said.

Dr. Hadi also outlines several key steps to becoming a more impactful public speaker:

  1. Know Your Audience
Understand their background, needs, and expectations to tailor your message accordingly. This can be done by speaking to event organizers or researching the audience beforehand.
  2. Familiarize Yourself with Tools
Visual and audio aids can greatly enhance your delivery. If you plan to use them, make sure you know how to operate them confidently.
  3. Scout the Venue
Get to know the stage layout, podium, audience seating, and technical facilities. Arriving early gives you time to adapt and feel more at ease.
  4. Prepare Your Material Thoroughly
Develop a well-structured and relevant script or outline. Use keywords or presentation slides to guide your delivery if needed.
  5. Practice is Essential
Rehearse multiple times to improve fluency, timing, and confidence.
  6. Take Care of Your Mind and Body
Get enough rest, eat well, stay active, and relax. Mental and physical wellness help you stay calm and focused on stage.

According to Dr. Hadi, thorough preparation not only builds confidence and stage presence but also reduces anxiety and nervousness.
