Get To Know The Survey Method Course

Hey there, Ilkomers! For those of you currently in your 3rd semester, you’re probably already familiar (or maybe even stressed out) with one of the courses, right? Yep, none other than Survey Methods. Many students think this course is overwhelming because it deals with numbers, theories, and the structured rules of writing research reports. But actually, it’s not that scary! Once you get into it, it can even turn into a fun experience. You’ll really get the chance to dive into the research process from a communication studies perspective, from start to finish.

So, what exactly do we learn in this course? Let’s take a look at the explanation from one of the Survey Methods lecturers, Ikhsan Fuady, S.IP., M.Si.

What is the purpose of the Survey Methods course?
Survey Methods is designed to give students a solid foundation on how to conduct scientific research, especially using the survey approach. With 3 credits (2 for theory and 1 for practice), students aren’t just introduced to theory, they’re also trained to apply it through simple research projects that follow scientific standards.

Are there any changes in this year’s syllabus?
In principle, the Communication Studies curriculum is usually updated periodically. The last revision for Survey Methods was in 2025. However, there haven’t been any major changes in terms of topics or teaching methods since the 2020 curriculum. In fact, more adjustments have been made in the Social Statistics course.

What’s the teaching method like?
The teaching approach used is known as learning by doing. This means students are expected to actively study the material, read references, and participate in discussions. In the second half of the semester, they begin working on individual or group research projects using scientific methods. So, the theories introduced earlier in the semester are really put to the test in practice. As for the final assignment, students are required to write a scientific article that will then be submitted to journals accredited under SINTA.

In the International Undergraduate Program (IUP), the process is the same as in the regular class, but the material is delivered in English. The outcome is also the same, except IUP students must write their article in English. However, this doesn’t mean they have to submit to international journals, since many Indonesian journals also accept English-language articles.

How are students assessed?
Assessment in this course is based on a predetermined rubric consisting of several main components: assignments, quizzes, midterms, projects, and participation. Assignments and projects are graded using clear criteria, while quizzes focus more on testing understanding of the basic concepts.

What skills are required?
The key skills students must have are reading and analytical skills, especially when writing a literature review. This is the foundation for academic writing. Students also need to get used to reading academic journals, which are of course very different from reading popular articles. The ability to identify keywords, main points, and critically evaluate the content is just as important. In addition, sampling techniques and data analysis skills are sharpened through hands-on practice. This process gradually builds students’ understanding of how to properly apply scientific methods.

So, Ilkomers, now you should already have a big-picture view of what the Survey Methods class is all about, from its goals, to the learning process, to the skills you’ll need. Among all of these, one stands out as the ultimate key to mastering this course, writing a literature review.
