Every March 24, we commemorate one of the historic events in Indonesia’s struggle for independence: Bandung Lautan Api. This event is not only a story about the flames that burned the city, but also a symbol of the unyielding spirit, courage, and determination of the Indonesian people in defending their independence.
The beginning of this heroic tragedy happened in 1946, less than a year after Indonesia proclaimed its independence. At that time, the Allied forces were trying to regain power in Indonesia. Tensions rose in many cities, including Bandung. The Allies demanded that civilians and armed forces leave North Bandung. However, the residents and fighters of Bandung refused to give up their city so easily. In a monumental decision, led by Colonel A.H. Nasution, the Indonesian Army and the people decided to vacate the city while burning it down – so that it could not be used by the enemy. That night, Bandung turned into a sea of fire. Buildings were burned, and residents fled south.
More than just a military action, Bandung Lautan Api was a statement that independence was not something that could be exchanged or bargained for. That this homeland was fought for with unpaid blood and courage. Now that we live in a time when we are independent, the commemoration of Bandung Lautan Api is a reminder that the fighting spirit must continue to burn. We may no longer take up arms, but we can continue the spirit by maintaining unity, rejecting injustice, and building the country wholeheartedly. [Ed]
