Every year on December 25, Christians around the world celebrate Christmas Day to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. This celebration is a sacred and meaningful moment, as it is believed to mark the birth of the Savior into the world. From a historical-theological perspective, Christmas is understood as the event of the Incarnation, God’s presence in human form to bring salvation and redemption to humankind.
The month of December itself is often filled with various Christmas ornaments and decorations that create a warm and festive atmosphere, especially as it coincides with the celebration of the New Year. In addition to its distinctive decorations, Christmas Day is also known for its unique culinary traditions enjoyed together with family. Like other religious celebrations, Christmas dishes play an important role in fostering togetherness.
For example, Christmas celebrations in Western countries are often associated with gingerbread cookies. These cookies contain spices such as ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg, which provide a warming flavor. Therefore, they are commonly served in December, which coincides with the winter season in Europe. Gingerbread cookies are usually shaped like people, Christmas trees, or houses and are often decorated in an attractive way, making them especially popular among children.

In the category of main dishes, roast pork is one of the most popular dishes, particularly among communities in North Sumatra ahead of Christmas celebrations. This dish is prepared by roasting the pork until the skin becomes crispy and glossy, while the meat remains tender and juicy. It is often served as a special meal enjoyed together with extended family in a festive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, for dessert, Klappertaart is one of the traditional dishes that frequently appears in Christmas celebrations, especially in the Manado region. This food has a historical background closely tied to the Dutch colonial period in Indonesia. In the past, klappertaart was considered a luxurious dish because it used ingredients that were not easily obtained. Therefore, this dessert was usually served only on special occasions, including Christmas. Klappertaart is known for its sweet flavor, soft and creamy texture, and distinctive coconut aroma and taste.

More than just decorations and food, Christmas Day is essentially a celebration of the values of love, patience, and tolerance upheld by Christians. Christmas serves as a reminder of the importance of sharing warmth, strengthening relationships with one another, and fostering a sense of peace in social life.
