Hello, Ilkomers! Did you know that since 2025, there has been a change in the graduate profiles of Communication Studies at Unpad? The third graduate profile, which used to be called Social Entrepreneur, has now been transformed into Professional in Communication for Development. Graduates with this profile are expected to have the ability to identify problems, as well as to design, implement, and evaluate communication programs that focus on community-based development.
So, why was the name changed? The term Social Entrepreneur was considered too narrow in scope. By definition, a Social Entrepreneur refers to individuals who are able to seize communication opportunities to establish new ventures that benefit society at large. However, this orientation was seen as being too heavily focused on the business aspect. In reality, communication can also serve as a powerful tool for empowerment and social development, which are not always profit-driven.
That’s why the third graduate profile has now been broadened. Graduates with this profile may pursue careers as Communication Entrepreneurs or Community Development Officers. A Communication Entrepreneur uses communication as a pathway for innovation and business opportunities, while a Community Development Officer applies communication to strengthen, build, and empower communities more holistically.
Moreover, this new graduate profile aligns with several points of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, graduates are expected to contribute to SDG 1 (No Poverty) by supporting communication programs that empower communities economically, SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by developing communication initiatives that encourage equal participation across all groups, and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through strategies that give a voice to marginalized communities.
So now you know the reason behind the change in the third graduate profile of Communication Studies. The real question is, are you interested in becoming part of this profile, Ilkomers?
