Press Release Public Communication Lecture with Pramono Anung

The Communication Science Department of Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) held a Public Communication Lecture titled “Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta Towards a Global City” on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Postgraduate Auditorium of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Unpad. The event featured the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Dr. Ir. Pramono Anung Wibowo, M.M., as the keynote speaker. The lecture drew great enthusiasm from participants, with hundreds of undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students of Communication Studies in attendance. The event was also attended by the Rector of Universitas Padjadjaran, Prof. Arief S. Kartasasmita, dr., Sp.M(K)., M.Kes., Ph.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat, S.Sos., S.H., M.Si., professors, department heads, faculty members, invited guests, and members of the media.

Dr. Dadang Rahmat Hidayat officially opened the event with a welcoming address, followed by remarks from Rector Prof. Arief S. Kartasasmita. The public lecture then began with a presentation by Dr. Ir. Pramono Anung Wibowo.

Presentation by the Governor of DKI Jakarta

In his presentation, Governor Pramono explained the strategies of the provincial government to transform Jakarta into a global city. He shared that Jakarta currently ranks 74th out of 156 global cities, which he views as both a challenge and a motivation for continuous improvement. He emphasized three key principles of development: inclusivity, responsiveness, and accountability.

Pramono underlined the importance of transparency in providing services to all citizens and being open to criticism and suggestions. He shared that he personally takes the time to read feedback on his social media accounts. He demonstrated the principle of responsiveness by making swift decisions, stating, “Small matters that represent the voice of the people must be addressed immediately.”

He further highlighted the need for accountability in every policy so that its benefits can be directly experienced by the community. Several major projects, such as the revitalization of Blok M, were financed without using the Regional Budget (APBD), but instead through the transparent use of the Floor Area Ratio (KLB) as a funding source. According to him, this transparency is an example of effective public communication that builds public interest and participation in creating a Jakarta that is accessible for everyone.

Recalling the demonstrations that took place several weeks earlier, Pramono explained that the #JagaJakarta movement was the government’s swift response to the crisis. The strategy involved revitalizing and optimizing public facilities as well as providing health services. What began as a hashtag became concrete action that successfully encouraged Jakarta residents to get involved. He emphasized that this was a tangible solution and part of the provincial government’s public communication strategy to rebuild public trust.

The lecture continued with a question-and-answer session. In response to a question about the Kampung Bayang issue, Pramono said that the government provides intensive dialogue as a communication channel to reach common ground between the government and local residents. When asked about his leadership style, which is known for being conciliatory, Pramono stated that the key lies in communication. Through good communication, he chooses to embrace all parties and resolve issues comprehensively.

Answering a question about aid distribution, he emphasized the importance of transparency and accessibility. The Jakarta Provincial Government uses the JAKI application so that residents can monitor aid distribution digitally while also inviting the public to visit City Hall in person. “What is discussed in public spaces becomes a priority that we must resolve,” he concluded.

The Head of the Communication Studies Program at Fikom Unpad, Kunto S. Wibowo, noted that today’s session gave students the chance to learn a fundamental lesson exemplified by the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, where listening takes center stage.

“Traditionally, communication focuses mainly on speaking, while listening is often overlooked. Governor Pramono’s example highlights that listening is essential for everyone, especially public officials, to develop policies that truly make an impact,” Kunto said.

This lecture highlighted that the programs of the Jakarta Provincial Government are in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Inclusive, responsive, and accountable urban development supports the achievement of SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), addresses social inequality in accordance with SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and strengthens governance transparency as mandated by SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).

The event concluded with the presentation of a token of appreciation from the Rector of Unpad to the Governor of DKI Jakarta, followed by the presentation of a plaque by the Dean of Fikom Unpad together with the Head of the Communication Science Study Program. The Governor then presented a gift to Unpad as a symbol of strong collaboration. The event ended with a group photo session with the governor, university leaders, and all lecture participants.
