What I learned from IISMA: Recommendations from Abroad

Hello, Communication Science Students!

In June 2024, five Communication Science students from Unpad who participated in the 2023 IISMA student exchange program completed their final presentation as their last academic responsibility to the Communication Science Study Programme. During the presentation, the students shared their academic and non-academic experiences abroad, discussed the positive aspects and resources encountered during their studies, and provided recommendations for the development of the Communication Science Study Programme.

Zidane Rafif Ramzaki, known as Jay or Zidane, is a 2020 Communication Science student who participated in the IISMA program at Universiti Sains Malaysia. He appreciated the integration of exchange students with local students in several courses, fostering collaboration between both groups. He also praised the campus facilities, particularly the large, air-conditioned buses that enhanced comfort and could accommodate many students at once. Finally, Zidane suggested improving the future MBKM program by increasing outreach efforts socialization with a clearly displayed timeline and conversion information.

Next, Florencia Elaine, a 2021 Communication Science student, studied at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Elaine shared several ideas for improvement based on her experiences, such as the availability of mental health support and its widespread information around the campus. Maastricht University also has a writing center equipped with computers and numerous study tables, where students can consult with lecturers for assistance in writing papers, articles, theses, or personal fiction works. She believes that establishing a Writing Center at Fikom would be beneficial, as many Communication Science students frequently engage in writing assignments and scholarly articles. Such a facility, along with lecturer support, would greatly assist students in their academic endeavors.

Kimi Mikael, a 2020 Communication Science student, studied at Palacky University Olomouc in the Czech Republic in 2023. Kimi highlighted the academic system in Europe, where professors implement highly interactive teaching methods. Professors provide ample space for student participation, to the extent that their curriculum and classes are sometimes shaped by the students’ interests. This system encouraged Kimi to adapt and increased his curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Regarding facilities, Kimi also appreciated the availability of 24-hour libraries across Europe, which offer a conducive and comfortable environment for students to study and complete assignments.

Shanice Stacia is a 2020 Communication Science student who attended Humboldt Universität-Zu Berlin for her exchange semester. She particularly enjoyed excursions and observational activities around the campus during her studies there. During class sessions, students were occasionally taken outside to interview other students on the topics being studied. In some classes, they often visited public places such as museums and exhibitions, where professors could provide direct explanations and examples of the subjects being discussed. This teaching method aims to prevent students from becoming bored by sitting in class and to allow them to practice what they have learned directly, making it easier to understand and remember.

These are some of the development recommendations gathered from Communication Science students who participated in the 2023 IISMA program. The suggested academic systems and facilities, based on their international study experiences,if implemented and adapted to Indonesian students’ habits, could significantly enhance academic activities and improve the overall comfort for students.
