Students’ Experience on Communication Science Usage in Internships

Great communication skills are necessary for various situations in life. Which is why the knowledge and skills acquired by Communication Science students are relevant for a lot of jobs. In general, the career paths that can be chosen by Communication Science undergraduates consist of these three profiles: Scientific Communication Professional, Digital Communication Planner, and Social Entrepreneur.

Awfa Ikmal Hannan is a class of 2022 Communication Science student who’s currently going through an internship at the by.U company in the Community Product & Brand Activation division. He and his colleagues are tasked to understand the market and customers’ needs by exploring event ideas that are relevant to increase community engagement. Relevant skills consist of being communicative, research skills, being adaptive, up to date with the latest trends, and being able to fit in with communities. Therefore, knowledge from courses like Campaign and Propaganda, Survey Methods, Social Marketing Communication, and Planning Communication is relevant for the job.

Muhamad Arifin Ilham is a class of 2022 Communication Science student who’s doing an internship at Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) Casting Plant in the Production Improvement division. His main job is to research the communication channels in the company and to give suggestions and solutions for the company’s internal communication. Two main skills that are necessary for the position are critical thinking to understand the company’s needs and public speaking to communicate with various stakeholders. Therefore, courses like Organization Communication, Public Speaking, and Interpersonal Communication are relevant for the job.

There’s also Salsabila Rahadatul Aisy who’s a class of 2021 Communication Science student who’s currently going through an internship at Bank Indonesia, more specifically, the Jawa Barat Representative Office in the Payment System division as a Researcher. Every KMBI (Kampus Merdeka Bank Indonesia) staff has one project that needs to be done and produce the expected output. Sasa is currently working on a project related to communication strategies and education on the digital economy payment system. She’s also tasked to help the work units by preparing socialization and education materials, compiling data, and recapping data. She said that critical thinking, creative thinking, research, and professional communication skills are relevant with the job. Meanwhile, relevant college courses include Survey Methods, Communication Audit, Campaign and Propaganda, Photography and Visual Communication, Persuasive Communication, and Creative Writing.

Last but not least, Sakura Hanaoka, class of 2021 Communication Science student also shared her intern experience. Sakura’s currently going through an internship at Telkom Corporate University in the Event Management position. Her job varies from coordinating internal events like podcasts and webinars, making e-magazine contents, to assisting in socialization activities and realizing Telkom Corp U’s programs. She said that the necessary skills for the job consist of time management, teamwork, event planning, communication, and digital skills to organize the contents and platforms. Organization Communication, Campaign and Propaganda, and Public Speaking are relevant courses for the position.

All of them also wanted to remind us to keep fighting in college because it will help us immensely at work. Start participating in various events either in or outside campus and don’t hesitate to try out new things. Through doing so, you can be more prepared in your future careers. Also, we can see that communication skills are very necessary and relevant for a lot of jobs. (Ed)
