Happy World Day Against Sexual Exploitation: Let’s Create a Safer World

One week ago, the world commemorated the Day Against Sexual Exploitation on March 4. This day is a reminder that sexual exploitation is still a serious problem that must be eradicated together.

Dr. Rachmaniar, M.I.Kom., a Communication Science lecturer who is also an expert in the field of violence and communication, gave her views on how sexual exploitation in terms of violent communication and the challenges in fighting sexual exploitation.

“Sexual exploitation in violent communication occurs when a person is not treated as a whole human being, but as an object that can be used sexually. This can come in the form of demeaning words, images, or ways of speaking. Unfortunately, this is often considered normal or even unconscious, even though it reflects inequality and injustice,” she said.

According to Rachmaniar, to avoid exploitative or manipulative communication is to start teaching children and teenagers respect for themselves and others. They need to understand personal boundaries, recognize signs of manipulation, and have the courage to say “no” when faced with uncomfortable situations.

However, Rachmaniar also recognizes that this effort is not easy. Rachmaniar highlighted that the biggest challenge in delivering messages about sexual exploitation is dealing with the ignorance, stigma and discomfort of many people to talk about it openly. Many still think that this issue is a taboo topic or blame the victim, making it difficult to build the right awareness.

Facing this challenge, Rachmaniar emphasized that messages about sexual exploitation must be delivered in a way that evokes empathy, but does not cause excessive fear. “The message we convey must be strong enough to open eyes, but also full of empathy so that people care and want to act,” she added.
