Every 10th of November, Indonesians commemorate the National Heroes’ Day. The date was chosen because of a historical post-proclamation event on the same date, namely, the Battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945. The battle, which was won by the Allied Powers, caused the deaths of many of our nation’s heroes, but their fighting spirit stayed strong and immovable. Because of their tenacity, we can enjoy living in our lovely nation to this day.
This year, the National Heroes’ Day commemoration carries a meaningful theme, namely “Emulate Your Heroes, Love Your Country”. This theme invites us to honour the heroes who have fought for the unity of Indonesia. In addition, this theme also means that we must also emulate the values of struggle and the spirit of patriotism of the heroes and maintain the principles and character of the Indonesian nation in today’s modern era. Through this theme, the National Heroes’ Day 2024 is expected to be a momentum for us, especially the younger generation, to reflect on the struggle of the heroes and internalize their values in our daily lives.
Hopefully, the spirit and value of their struggle can encourage us to create and contribute in making positive changes for the nation. Happy National Heroes’ Day! (Ed)
