Nyepi Day is a celebration of the Saka New Year for Hindus and is a sacred moment to do self-reflection through an atmosphere full of tranquility and meaning. In the Year of Saka 1948, the celebration of Nyepi falls on Friday, March 19, 2026.
This Nyepi tradition has its roots in the Saka calendar which has been used since the 8th century and has developed strongly in Hindu religious practices in Indonesia, especially in Bali. Ahead of Nyepi, Hindus perform a series of ceremonies such as Melasti as a purification ritual, Tawur Kesanga to balance man’s relationship with nature, as well as the procession of ogoh-ogoh which symbolizes the cleansing of negative elements in life.
On Nyepi day, Hindus carry out Catur Brata Penyepian, which is the four main taboos in the form of not lighting fires or lights, not working, not traveling, and not enjoying entertainment. The atmosphere of silence created is not just a tradition, but a space for reflection to rearrange thoughts, behaviors, and spiritual relationships with God and fellow humans. The main value of Nyepi teaches the importance of introspection, balance, and harmony, so this celebration not only has religious significance for Hindus, but also serves as a reminder of the importance of pause and self-awareness in modern life.
