Get To Know The Public Speaking Course

Hi, Ilkomers! When we drop by Fikom these days, we often see new faces full of fresh enthusiasm, right? Yup, they’re our new family members, the Ilkomers class of 2025!

Looking back, it reminds us of the first time we entered university. Excited, curious, and eager to learn new things. From studying mathematics, science, or social studies in high school, suddenly we were welcomed with four new courses that felt completely different.

One of them is Public Speaking, a compulsory course for all first-semester Ilkomers. So, Ilkomers 2025, curious about what Public Speaking is like?

Tantri Anisa Hanjani, M.I.Kom, one of our Public Speaking lecturers, has already answered some of the common questions students often feel too shy to ask. Her insights can definitely be your go-to guide for making it easier to score well in class. Curious about her tips? Let’s check them out!

What is the purpose of the Public Speaking course?
Aside from what’s stated in the syllabus, the main goal is for students to be able to speak logically, clearly, and in a structured way using different methods in public. It’s not just about speaking, but also about writing speeches, meaning you need to conceptualize what you want to deliver.

In class, we usually get to try out different public speaking methods, like extemporaneous (using small notes as a guide while speaking in public), impromptu (speaking spontaneously), and manuscript (reading from a script).

Are there any changes in this year’s syllabus?
Yes! One of them is Public Speaking in digital media, which is clearly different from face-to-face audiences. It can take the form of content, vlogs, and more, because you don’t get immediate reactions from your viewers. There’s also a stronger emphasis on storytelling, which comes in many forms, like product promotion and stand-up comedy to tutorial videos. In recent years, storytelling has proven to be a powerful and essential skill.

What’s the teaching method like?
It’s a combination of theory and practice. While practice is very important, theory is just as crucial. Remember, public speaking is learning by doing. Once you understand the theory, you need to put it into action.

How are students assessed?
The mid-term exam (UTS) is theory-based, while the final exam (UAS) is practical. Both are balanced between theory and practice. There are also assignments, like writing speeches, that must align with what’s been taught.

What skills are required?
Quite a few! From using technology, applying proper vocal techniques and breathing, using good language, analyzing the audience, writing appropriate scripts, to being open to and responding to feedback.

So, Ilkomers, when we connect this to the professional world, public speaking skills are highly relevant. No matter how brilliant your ideas are, they’ll go to waste if you can’t communicate them clearly. Public speaking makes you more confident, more convincing, and helps others truly understand your message. From client presentations, group meetings, to pitching ideas to your boss, everything requires this skill. Even in your undergraduate thesis, you’ll feel the impact of good public speaking.

That’s why public speaking is a timeless skill. Even AI can’t replace it!

So, now you know what to expect from the Public Speaking course. Hopefully, you’ll gain much more than just grades, Ilkomers!
